cupcake tier

Cupcakes are always fun and everyone loves to have a bite size piece of their own. Birthdays and cupcakes just go together, and stacking them up just makes it all the more fun.

First Birthday

The first birthday is always special. This was my son Rome's first birthday cake. He had his own little cake that he got to devour with his own hands. It was a 4 inch round cake that I covered in blue colored fondant. Just a simple 1 on the top and all of the other colors rolled into balls on the bottom. I made a big cut out 1 for everyone else to eat. I just chose some boy colors and cut fondant out into different sized stripes. Putting them on the cake took a little bit of time, but I think it turned out cute.

Circles

Happy New Year!
I thought that we could start the new year off with a big three tiered cake. This design is a sort of geometric/abstract mix. It is covered in fondant and all the shapes are also fondant. It is actually pretty easy to do, but a little time consuming. It is much easier to do with two people, one cutting out and the other placing on the cake. One thing that you have to be careful of is cutting out too many shapes and then they dry out before they are on the cake. A little helpful hit is to cover the cutout pieces with plastic, although it is still not good to get too ahead of yourself.

Beauty and the Beast

Bell from Beauty and the Beast. This was for my daughter Annalyse's 3rd birthday. We went through every character possible to figure out what she wanted for a birthday cake. She finally landed on a barbie cake and then given all the choices for that she chose Bell. I bought the barbie of corse (I liked this ones hair). Annalyse will only eat the fondant and fillings, not the actual cake, so the dress is all fondant. I made all the creases and then added candy pearls to it. She loved it!

Pumpkin

Here is something a little festive, a pumpkin cake. Well okay the color isn't really orange because I ran out of orange spray and it was just for us and friends so I didn't mind too much. So call it a squash or something. I built it just like any other cake and then just carved it out with a knife to make the ridges. The stem and leaves are fondant. It's just a little something different to add to the Thanksgiving table.

Mom's Birthday cake

My parents where going to be at my house for my mom's birthday and I have never really been able to make cakes for my family so i seized the opportunity. I made her a two tiered cake. I decided to make the stripes go horizontally instead of vertically just to have a different look. I hand cut the flowers out of gum-paste and stuck them on the cake. I think it turned out cute and she loved it. It was a bit more cake than we actually needed for 5 people, but I wanted her to be spoiled for once.

Fresh Roses

This simple but elegant cake is two tiers. It is covered in a smooth vanilla white fondant. There is a ivory ribbon running along the bottom of both tiers and big red roses on the top. Even though there isn't much to this cake, sometimes it doesn't take a lot to make a statement. For this cake that statement is love.
